MARCHETTI

“No!” I screamed, and dropped the phone. There was a roaring in my ears, and fear and panic flooded my brain. Oh, my God! He’s dead! The man with the gun walked to the guardrail and peered over. Rage replaced the fear.

I was over the seat and into the storage compartment and then I was opening the door and running. I had a gun in my hand. I was thirty feet away when he lifted the gun and aimed down over the side where David had fallen.

Suddenly the air was filled with a bloodcurdling scream. It was my voice. The man turned and brought the gun up and aimed it at me. I was still screaming as I raised my arms, pointed and pulled the trigger.

The gun jumped wildly, but I kept shooting. By mere luck one of the shots hit the man in the head and he crumpled to the ground. I fired until the gun was empty. The screaming stopped, but had been replaced by crying. I dropped the gun and ran over to the guardrail.

I looked over, even though I knew what I’d see. David was lying motionless, faceup, on the ground.

I turned away. I was shaking so bad that I had to sit down, and when I did my hand touched the shotgun lying next to the dead guy. The guy I had just killed. That made two.

I heard a door open and looked up and saw a man come out of a trailer that was parked on the side of the road. He had a gun. He called out in a language I didn’t understand. He didn’t sound happy. When no one answered, he left the doorway and moved toward me.

I slowly picked up the shotgun and pointed it at him. He was moving closer but still didn’t see me. I tried to control my breathing and remember not to sniffle. He was ten feet away and the slight rise of the road and sidewalk hid me from his view. He did not see me yet; but it would be only seconds before he did.

I was scared and angry and sad and a million other things. I knew this guy would kill me, just like the other one had killed David.

I had killed one man accidentally with a truck. I had shot one man wildly out of fear and anger; this one was going to be on purpose. This one was going to be revenge.

The man moved closer and I lifted the gun, aimed it as best I could, which, since he was almost right on top of me, didn’t take much. I took a deep breath and pulled the trigger. The kick made the gun fly out of my hands. I scrambled after it. He fell over.

That made number three. Minutes passed, but no one else came charging out of the trailer. I just sat there clutching the gun for a while, waiting for anybody else to show up. A weird calm settled over me.
